"Rudimentos Flamencos," an Etude for Snare Drum that explores the intricate rhythms and techniques of the Buleria style. Through a comprehensive study of the 5-stroke roll and 7-stroke roll rudiments, percussionists can master the dynamic and expressive qualities essential to Flamenco music. This Etude is designed to challenge and inspire drummers of all skill levels. It is a valuable tool for those seeking to enhance their understanding and execution of Flamenco percussion. It could be played in a Cajon as well.
My students at Tierra Adentro and the National Institute of Flamenco in Albuquerque inspired the percussion ensemble piece I composed named “Buleria del Desierto.” The purpose of this piece was to showcase the use of rudiments within the context of the Buleria rhythm. The composition comprises three distinct parts, each incorporating various snare drum rudiments to enhance the overall groove. In the piece's final section, there is a rhythmic modulation from a 3/4 to a 6/8 time signature, creating a "Fin de Fiesta" feeling that brings the performance to an exciting close. I am proud to have had the opportunity to make this piece for my students and to witness them develop their skills as percussionists and Flamenco musicians.
